The huscarls were the feared front line troops of the early English army. Widely feared and seriously tough, it was said that one huscarl was worth any two of the best Viking warriors going at the time.

Their weapon of choice was the massive two-handed battle-axe, and with it they could go toe-to-toe with any fighting man, anywhere. These lads lived by honour - sworn to fight to the death rather than crawl home without their lord.

At the Battle of Hastings, once King Harold was killed, the huscarls refused to yield and refused to leave the battlefield . They rallied at a place they called Malfosse, where they launched a last, desperate stand. The slaughter they caused was so heavy that once again the outcome of the battle hung in the balance.

In the end, they were overwhelmed. Every last one of them went down fighting, dying around the king’s personal banner - the Fighting Man.
