This print comes straight from the Alfred the Great statue in Winchester. Alfred wasn’t just another king - he was the king who helped make England what it is. When the Vikings came hard in the 9th century, he didn’t fold. Outnumbered and under pressure, he fought back and turned the tide. It was said that in these battles, the Viking Wars, although often outnumbered, Alfred fought "like a wild boar".

He’s the only English king ever called the Great. Says it all.

The words at the bottom are lifted from an Anglo-Saxon poem in Old English. Roughly translated:

"Advice must be given, rune written, song sung, fame earned, judgment pronounced, the day seized."

No messing about. Get on with it.
